On June 20th we open our most popular exhibition, the annual Sumter Artists’ Guild Exhibition and opening reception 5:30 – 7:30 pm. The winners will be announced at the opening reception.
Sumter is home to so many talented artists working in all mediums – paint, clay, fiber, metal, wood. The Sumter Artists Guild was founded in 1966 by some of Sumter's most prominent artists. Its membership has always included amateur and professional artists. Its mission is "to promote, support and foster interest in art and to create an opportunity for our community of artists to engage in cooperative artistic enterprises and to foster art appreciation in our community." The Guild was instrumental in founding the Sumter County Gallery of Art in 1969.
The Sumter Artists’ Guild is one of the most active and close-knit artists’ guilds in the state. This year in early March, Laura Cardello passed away after a long illness, Laura was the long time Guild president, resident potter at the Sumter County Gallery of Art for over 20 years, founder of Art in the Park, and curator of the USC-Sumter Galleries. The Guild is now led by a dedicated Executive Board of talented artists, Treasurer Vicki Hagner, Erin Duffie, Lisa Melton and Jennifer Franklin. This group has been together for several years and provides continuity to the Guild as it absorbs the loss of Cardello and continues to add new members.
We are very pleased to have as the 2024 judge Darion McCloud. McCloud is guided by a simple principle: we have the power to make a difference in the world. He is an actor, storyteller, director, consultant, and teaching artist. McCloud is the cofounder and creative director of the NiA Company. The creator and Captain of Story Squad. A Riley Institute Diversity Fellow and a Leo Twiggs Scholar, and the former President of the Friends of African American Art and Culture, Columbia Museum of Art. Through his storytelling and creative workshops, McCloud aims to inspire a love of learning and a sense of curiosity in even the youngest of audiences. McCloud is immersed in the world of visual art. His partner is artist Michaela Pilar Brown, owner of Mike Brown Contemporary Art Gallery in Columbia. Through art, McCloud hopes to create a world where everyone can live a happy, fulfilling life. It all starts with understanding and empathy.
SCGA curator Eric Lachance notes: “Our special relationship with the Sumter Artists' Guild spans decades – and each year we celebrate the expression of our local artists. If you are interested in art or simply appreciate the arts, the annual Sumter Artists' Guild exhibition guarantees something for all tastes.
