Home Depot Military Discount - Operation Military Kids (2024)

Like thousands of other brands in the U.S., Home Depot offers a military discount to both active duty and retired military.

While the Home Depot military discount is generous, it used to have two major problems…

1. It was only available in stores, and

2. There were a ton of restricted items

However, at the end of 2021, Home Depot expanded its military discount program.

The discount program is available every day, and can also be redeemed with online purchases.

How do I claim my discount online?

Can I claim the discount on behalf of a family member?

We’ve had a few people ask us if it’s possible for them to claim the military discount on behalf of someone else that’s served in the military.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem possible.

We actually had someone leave a comment about this recently, check it out below:

“I’m helping my dad renovate his home. He is 75 years old. They told me the veteran has to be present with his or her military ID.

He uses a walker and it’s hard enough for him to come and go to scheduled appointments, much less a trip to Home Depot.

I have his military DD214 page and share the same last name as him.

Doesn’t matter, they will not honor the discount unless he is present.”

– Laura K.

So unless the veteran is present, you will not be able to redeem the military discount.

Can I use my DD214 as proof of military service?

According to Home Depot, the only way to use your military discount is to first enroll online by creating an account and having your military service verified.

You may need to upload a copy of your DD214 to register online.

Can I verify my military service in stores instead of doing it online?

Although I couldn’t find any specific info on this, if you go to your local Home Depot and visit the customer service desk, they will probably be able to help you sign up for an online account.

Just be sure to bring supporting documentation (military ID, DD214, etc.) as a backup.

Do I have to bring my military ID every time I go to make a purchase?

Not anymore. In the past, you had to provide some sort of proof that you served or are actively serving.

With that said, the new military discount is now done online, and you’re only required to verify your service one time.

Can I receive a military discount if I’ve been anything other than honorably discharged?

According to Home Depot’s official site, only dishonorably discharged veterans are not eligible for the military discount.

I’m a veteran, but the person at Home Depot just told me that they don’t give away military discounts anymore. What gives?!

You’re not the first one, unfortunately.

We’ve read a wide array of complaints from several veterans who said they tried claiming their 10% discount but were denied for one reason or another.

Here’s just a snapshot of a few of those complaints:

It seems like it really depends on the local Home Depot you’re dealing with, and whether or not they’re going to be strict about any particular rules.

Additionally, I have read from several other sources that you actually need to register with the customer service desk AND get approved to receive your military discount.

Many vets have sworn off Home Depot, and have decided to use Lowes for their purchases instead.

They certainly don’t make it easy! With that said…

How else does Home Depot help military veterans?

Despite the issues with their military discount program, Home Depot does A LOT for veterans.

Their Home Depot foundation has been helping veterans since 2011, both in the form of donations, and employment.

As I mentioned earlier, they currently employ over 35,000 veterans across the U.S. and have granted millions of dollars to nonprofit organizations that directly help veterans.

Specifically, they put an emphasis on ending veteran homelessness and donating money and resources to building homes for military veterans.

What does Service-Connected mean?

From the official VA website:

Disability compensation is a monetary benefit paid to Veterans who are determined by VA to be disabled by an injury or illness that was incurred or aggravated during active military service. These disabilities are considered to be service connected.
