“Lake Tahoe is too important, too special to have 8 miles of trash at the bottom of it.”- Jesse Patterson, League to Save Lake TahoeDefunct, lead-wrapped telecommunications cables are sitting on the bottom of Lake Tahoe. For years, our team at the League has been working through a convoluted web of agencies, companies, scientists, and lawyers—mainly behind the scenes—to get them out as quickly as possible. And we’re not alone. While there are roadblocks to clear, the League is committed to getting the cables out to Keep Tahoe Blue, whatever it takes.Read the story 👉 https://lnkd.in/g_iSn5QB

Today, Earth Day 2024, the League to Save Lake Tahoe stands proudly behind the groundbreaking single-use plastic water bottle ban in South Lake Tahoe and Truckee—a significant step in our ongoing mission to protect and preserve our beloved Lake. This transformative policy wasn't an overnight accomplishment; it is the fruit of a decade's worth of litter data collection, community engagement, and science-led initiatives. The League's approach has always been data-driven. From 2014 to 2023, through countless cleanup events, our volunteers have gathered substantial evidence of the plastic problem in the Basin, collecting over 20,100 plastic bottles, 31,300 plastic caps, and 163,800 pieces of unidentifiable plastic debris. Armed with this compelling data, we have raised awareness and crafted a narrative that spurred action and policy change. The League prepared for this transition by focusing on education and readiness. Our incredible Community Engagement team hit the streets, ensuring residents, visitors, and commercial vendors were prepared for the switch. Their hard work encouraged the adoption of sustainable alternatives and amplified the League's message that small changes in our daily habits can have a profound impact on our environment.Let's raise a glass (of clear and delicious Tahoe tap water) and join us in celebrating this pivotal movement. Support the cause, spread the word, and embrace the alternatives.#EarthDay2024 #PlasticFreeTahoe #DataDrivenChange #EnvironmentalEducation #KeepTahoeBlue #TahoevsPlastics

This Earth Month, our journey in science-driven environmental advocacy is marked by the integration of high-tech solutions and grassroots participation. From deploying innovative technologies like the BEBOT—a solar-powered, beach-cleaning robot that efficiently removes tiny bits of trash from our beaches—to empowering the community through our citizen science programs, every step is calculated and impactful."Science to Solutions" isn't just about employing advanced technology; it's about creating a broad, inclusive platform for change. Our efforts have catalyzed significant policy shifts, such as local bans on single-use plastics and polystyrene, stemming from our rigorous data collection and analysis. This approach has allowed us to tackle not only the symptoms but the sources of environmental degradation. As we move forward, the League remains committed to this dual approach of cutting-edge science and community involvement. We will continue refining our methods and expanding our reach, proving that the possibilities are endless when we unite science with community action. Today, the League to Save Lake Tahoe marks its 67th anniversary! We celebrate a legacy of significant environmental milestones that have shaped the preservation of Lake Tahoe since our founding in 1957. With our supporters' energy and generosity fueling our work, the League has been instrumental in pivotal environmental achievements over the decades: In the 1950s and 60s, we successfully campaigned against a proposed bridge over Emerald Bay. We prevented plans for excessive regional development that would have overpopulated the area, preserving the Lake's natural state and beauty. Throughout the 1970s and 80s, our efforts helped establish urban growth boundaries, contributing to long-term environmental planning and protection. We also played a key role in stopping sewage runoff from being dumped into the Lake, which was a significant victory for water quality. The 1990s brought further triumphs, including the influential 1997 Tahoe Presidential Summit, which brought federal attention and funding for Tahoe's environmental restoration. During this time, we also successfully advocated for banning polluting two-stroke marine engines. In the 2000s & beyond, our focus has expanded to include innovative technological solutions and citizen science initiatives. We've pioneered programs like Eyes on the Lake and introduced cutting-edge technologies like beach-cleaning robots, which help manage and mitigate pollution and invasive species. These initiatives support our ongoing mission to maintain Lake Tahoe's ecological health through hands-on community involvement and science-based solutions. Our journey from 1957 to today proves our commitment to conservation, powered by community support and scientific research. As we look ahead, the League remains dedicated to advancing our mission to protect the Lake and ensure that Tahoe doesn't get loved to death. On the League's 67th anniversary, we honor the League's past achievements, the pioneers who came before us that kept Tahoe blue, along with the donors, volunteers and partners who helped make it all possible. Their hard work has allowed us to enjoy Lake Tahoe's beauty, just as they did generations ago. Today, the Keep Tahoe Blue spirit lives on in us stronger than ever, so in another 67 years, that generation will experience Lake Tahoe as we do today. #KeepTahoeBlue #ClimateAction #SustainableTahoe #LakeTahoeLove
